Starting the proper oral hygiene techniques at an early age will help your child understand the importance of caring for their smile each and every day. So, as a parent, it’s your job to assist in caring for your child’s teeth and gums until they are old enough to properly clean their own chompers. So, to help you do so, Dr. Trace M. Lund & Kevin R. Markham and our Provo Pediatric Dental team is happy to provide the following instructions on how to properly brush your child’s teeth each day:

-Step 1: As you brush, use a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums of the upper and lower teeth.

-Step 2: Move the toothbrush in a back-and-forth motion using short strokes along the gums and teeth. Use this same technique for each tooth and make sure to clean the back surfaces of the teeth as well.

-Step 3: You also need to clean the back surfaces of the front teeth. So, to do so, it’s best to tilt the brush in an upright position and clean behind the teeth with the tip of the toothbrush.

-Step 4: After you are done brushing, brush the surface of the tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your child’s breath.
